Rapidly Whitty and Full of Childhood Charm

Peter and the Starcatcher is a rapidly whitty look into the legend that became Peter Pan. Artistic Director, Evan Pappas and his team bring us another fabulous show with amazing choreography and imaginative set design. The cast of 12, play multiple roles with quick jokes surrounded by historical fiction set in a time before an orphaned boy becomes Peter pan, before a pirate becomes Captain Hook, and even explains how the tick tock got into the famous Croc!

Pirates and Pigtails

Everyone loves a good pirate story! In 1885, two sailing ships set forth with a cleverly schemed switcharoo of chests. No one knows what is in the desired chest, but a comedic set of buccaneers find a way to swindle the treasure without Lord Aster knowing. On a secret mission, Lord Aster, played well by Toby Miller, hopes to deliver his secret treasure on one ship while his daughter follows safely on another ship. Instead, he finds himself a captive below deck on his own ship with his daughter and her Nanny, Mrs. Bumbrake, played amazingly by Phillip Taratula.

A Young Peter

Unwilling to believe herself a captive, lovely Molly Aster, played beautifully by Katrina Michaels, sets out to fix things. The sole female in the cast, Katrina adds a delightful smile and sweetness to her precocious character. Molly and her father, Lord Aster, have a wonderful father/daughter relationship that carries you through the play. She’s determined to help save the day, imploring three orphans to join her in her quest. One of the orphans seems particularly lost. With nothing in his pocket or even a name to call himself by, 13 year old ‘Peter’ (Spencer Bang) seems to find his path and even ‘grows up’ a little as he finds the bravery to fight against the villainous Black Stache. Raji Ahsan portrays the young ‘captain’ brilliantly with humor and a painted on mustache.

Ships, Imagination, & Neverland

Act 2 finds the audience closer to the island of mermaids and lost boys. The scenery throughout the play is simple but perfect. With wood slats and hanging ropes, your eyes feel as if they’re on an old ship. The costumes draw you in and all 12 actors work quickly to transform small spaces on the stage into totally different spaces within seconds. Whether they’re holding poles for a doorway, using ropes as a ship’s balcony, or puppeteering mermaid costumes, your imagination runs wild.

Parent to Parent!

I recommend Peter and the Starcatcher for ages 13-15  and up due to suggestive language and joke content. Depending on the child’s age, a parent might be a little uncomfortable with the playful innuendo between the Nanny and a Pirate on two occasions. The rapid speech and descriptive content of the first act might not hold the attention of a child younger than 12, as well.

About the Argyle Theatre

The Argyle Theatre is tucked comfortably in beautiful Babylon Village. There is ample parking in various lots around town. Our tickets were waiting for us in the theatre and the house manager welcomed us warmly. We took a fun photo by their step & repeat before purchasing drinks and snacks. Behind the concession area, is a spacious lounge with a piano where we sat to chat before the show. There is also a bar and lounge area with additional bathrooms upstairs. The seating and set design was my favorite part of the theatre. The sets are designed in-house for every show. The seating, 250 off the main lobby and 250 up on the balcony, have wide walkways so no one has to get up if someone needs to step out during the show. (Love this!) Seating is extremely comfortable and there are cup holders for your beverages on every seat. Along the center of the floor, is accessible wheelchair seating to accommodate 8 wheelchairs close to their guests. There is a coat check service in the winter and group discounts are available for parties of 15 or more. Be sure to use the 'MACKID' discount code when checking out your purchase to save $10 on tickets.
